The North East in London for National Rejoin March

Members and supporters of the campaign group, North East for Europe, will head for Parliament Square on Saturday 10 September, five days after next Prime Minister due to take office. This is to join other pro-Europeans from across the country at the National Rejoin March.

The group will take their iconic banner to show a North East presence at the event. Campaigner, Christina Muller-Stewart says:

“Although it is a long way to go, past marches have shown how much our North East presence is appreciated in London. Our beautiful NE4EU marching banner has long become a beacon of hope and resilience.  We can’t let the south fight the battle against a catastrophic Brexit alone, I would therefore encourage anyone from the North to be in London on 10th September.”

This is supported by Louise Brown, one of the founder members of North East for Europe. Louise says:

“It’s important for us in the North East to go down on 10th September to show that the rejoin movement isn’t just a London centric one. I am also going because the North East is going to lose out on so much EU funding that won’t be properly replaced which during the cost of living crisis will be catastrophic “

The National Rejoin March

The march commences at 12 noon in Park Lane and arrives in Parliament Square at about 2:30pm. This will be followed by a rally and speeches in Parliament Square. Confirmed speakers for the rally include high-profile campaigner “Mr Stop Brexit” Steve Bray, Mike Galsworthy of Scientists for EU, campaigner Femi Oluwole and former London mayoral candidate Siobhan Benita. More names will be announced shortly

March organiser, Peter Corr says:

“We have left the EU.  We have got over that and now want to start a conversation about re-joining, now that we know that Brexit was a historic mistake, so much so that the majority of British people would support re-joining the EU according to the latest polls.

“With chronic shortages of doctors, nurses and care workers, we are all going to suffer from permanently understaffed hospitals and longer waiting times for treatment.  No one voted for this, but it’s the new reality in so many sectors of the economy – from logistics to farming, fishing to manufacturing and research to hospitality.  Brexit is costing the UK more than the Covid pandemic, plus the adverse effects and  costs will keep mounting  for decades to come – unless and until we change course.

Many thousands of people are expected to participate in this first Rejoin March. The organisers expect there to be many further marches in the future, continuing until the UK completes its journey back into the European Union.”

Sending a clear message to the new Prime Minister

Joint organiser Richard Wilson, from Leeds for Europe, says:

“A new Prime Minister will be in Downing Street on 5 September. Our march, just five days later, will send a very clear message to the new PM: Brexit was a terrible mistake for the UK.  The growth in the economy that the new Prime Minister will presumably want to promise cannot be delivered while we are suffering chronic shortages of labour and impediments to trade with our closest trading partners in Europe. 

“No one in government is willing to admit that Brexit is a root cause of the cost-of-living crisis, is responsible for the massive disruption being experienced at our ports and airports and has robbed UK citizens of the freedom of movement which we used to enjoy.  Brexit is the elephant in the room that the new Prime Minster must deal with as a priority.”

Thank EU for the Music event on the same day

In addition to the daytime march and rally, there will be an evening activity outside the Royal Albert Hall. At the “Last Night of the Proms” concert EU flags and berets will be distributed to concert goers for the sixth year in a row by the group Thank EU For The Music, a partner group for the Rejoin march. 

Peter Benson from the group says:

“There must be no borders for music, but Brexit has had a massive, adverse impact on musicians’ ability to travel and play concerts around Europe”.

“For the UK to return to growth and prosperity we must embrace the vast opportunities that re-joining will bring.

 “Skilled EU workers will return to work again in the UK, especially in logistics, construction, farming, hospitality and healthcare.  This will lead to better public services and the increased prosperity  that we all want for ourselves, our families and our friends. The conversation on rejoining needs to start now.”
