The recent decision of Newcastle Council to invest a further £1.2m into city neighbourhoods and estates is to be welcomed by all those want to see a clean and green environment.
The council will shortly launch a recruitment drive for 20 extra front-line staff. The additional investment will deliver improved strimming to make neighbourhood more attractive; better cleaning for key routes into the city centre; enhanced weed treatment, shrub maintenance and grass cutting , development of new bulb planting sites and planting of new wildflower meadows.
Survey evidence reveals that quality local neighbourhoods and estates are a top priority. The vast majority of Newcastle residents take a pride in where they live. The council working with residents, local groups like Newcastle Climate Change and the Girl Guides and YHN are fully committed to keeping our neighbourhoods safe, clean and green. That’s why we’re investing in their future in response to resident demand.
Neighbourhoods, green space and parks should be places where local people can meet, exercise, youngsters can play out and walk or cycle to school and where residents feel safe.
The additional work and investment will not only improve the look of estates in the suburbs, urban villages and across all wards in the city, but will also play a key role in addressing the climate change agenda and boosting people’s mental health and well-being.
Of-course the Council can’t do everything. Community based activity will continue to tackle the blight of litter and rubbish alongside the Council and YHN.
