The Labour Files: compelling TV investigation by Al-Jazeera

The Labour Party Conference is about to begin, and I have just watched Part 1 of The Labour Files. This is a three-part series, produced by Al-Jazeera and based on leaked data from the Labour Party between 1998 and 2021.

The Al-Jazeera website says:

“Al Jazeera’s Investigative Unit (I-Unit) has obtained the largest leak in British political history, exposing how unelected officials undermined democracy within the Labour Party.”

The Labour Files

The producers of the Labour Files say that they have been through “thousands of emails and social media messages” in this investigation. It shows how senior Labour figures, including unelected officials as well as a number of MPs used the disciplinary system in the party to systematically work to undermine any who dared to show support for Jeremy Corbyn. In far too many cases this involved suspension of individuals, branches and even Constituency Labour Parties (CLPs).

The Purge

The first programme, entitled ‘The Purge’ focuses on what was happening in three parts of the country – in Liverpool, Harrow and Brighton, with testimony from a number of local Labour activists. Some of what is shown may be familiar to you, but there will be much that is new. It will take a bit of processing, and so more coming soon…

It makes for grim watching…

Part 2 is on tonight at 9pm and Part 3 on Monday at 9pm

You can watch on Al-Jazeera English or later on Al-Jazeera youtube channel.

Definitely worth a watch.
