A North East man is set to climb Mount Kilimanjaro to fight Motor Neurone Disease in support of his colleague and friend. Peter Gillan from Newcastle is climbing the mountain which sits at a height of over 19,000 feet in September and is aiming to raise money and awareness to support his good friend and colleague, Allen Creedy, who was recently diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease.
Peter is doing the climb to raise money and awareness for the Motor Neurone Disease Association, a charity very close to his heart. He started his training by conquering mountains closer to home including the mighty Ben Nevis.
The challenge of climbing Kilimanjaro
Peter’s journey will start in Tanzania on 13 September and will see him reach the summit of the tallest mountain in Africa and the tallest freestanding mountain on the planet.
Speaking about the challenge Peter said:
“A dear friend and colleague, Allen Creedy, Planning Director at Ethical Partnership and SLC Property was recently diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease. The news came as a huge shock to all that know Allen.
As a chartered member of the Royal Town Planning Institute, Fellow of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment, and former Environment and Energy Policy lead at the Federation of Small Businesses, Allen has dedicated his life to delivering the infrastructure and other development needed to improve our environment, economy and society.
As a friend to many, it is important that we show Allen our support at this difficult time. Taking on Kilimanjaro is a daunting challenge, but nothing in comparison to that faced by those living with MND and their loved ones.
There are many more people like Allen. It seems that knowing someone that is living with an MND diagnosis is becoming increasingly common.
The truth is, MND can affect anyone – no matter your age or lifestyle. We must do more to raise awareness and support research into treating this condition.”
How you can help
Peter has launched his fundraising page to raise as much money as possible throughout his challenge with every penny raised helping those living with MND and their families impacted by this disease.
Inspired by his endeavours, Peter’s colleagues at Ethical Partnership have also joined in the MND fundraising efforts with Alannah Healey, Sophie Stanton and Jo Rogers set to take on this year’s Great North Run.
