Today Steve Bray, the campaigner known as Mr Stop Brexit, is being followed by police as he protests outside parliament. It seems that he has been assigned two officers to “stick with him and follow him all day”. This is a new occurrence which may (or may not) be linked to the new policing law.
Steve Bray has campaigned at Westminster for over five years with SODEM (Stand of Defiance European Movement). Initially the group protested against Brexit. Whilst the focus now is still pro-European, the group has widened its scope to campaign on a range of issues, including against government scandal and dishonesty, for example Partygate and the changes to the Northern Ireland Protocol.
The first day of the new policing law
Only two weeks ago, on the day when the new policing law came into force, Steve’s sound equipment was confiscated by the Met Police and he was told by a police officer that he was being summonsed. Since then it has appeared to calm down somewhat.
Staying with Steve Bray all day
However, today the police told Steve that they were going to be with him all day, allegedly for his safety. The police officer concerned said that it was the orders that he had been given. Steve has explained that he did not want to be followed and that “this is not North Korea or the old Soviet Union”.
The safety reference is interesting and possibly not even part of the policing law. Steve Bray commented that he had been assaulted many times, which were reported to the police and that nothing had been done about it.
The protest today
Today protestors hold placards with messages such as:
“Johnson, caretaker of his own interest. Get him out now!”
“Get Borexit done!”
“Benny Hill 4PM”
