Man charged for stabbing of Steve Jay in Ipswich

A man has been charged after a police officer, Steve Jay, a police dog and another man were stabbed in Suffolk.

PC Steve Jay, 52, and the dog called Aman were injured in Nacton Road in Ipswich shortly after 20:00 BST on Tuesday.

Asher Picort, 21, of Oulton Road, Ipswich, was charged with two counts of grievous bodily harm and one count of criminal damage on Thursday.

He remains in custody and will appear at Ipswich Magistrates’ Court later, Suffolk police said.

PC Steve Jay was taken to Ipswich Hospital and is recovering at home.

The six-year-old German Shepherd, Aman underwent emergency surgery at a veterinary clinic and is said to be recovering well.

The 47-year-old man who was also stabbed was taken to Ipswich Hospital with a stomach wound and is understood to be in a stable condition.

Picort was jailed later for five years after admitting stabbing PC Steve Jay and a police dog in Suffolk.

Unemployed Asher Picort, lashed out at PC Steve Jay and his dog Aman after a one-mile chase, Ipswich Crown Court heard.

Police had been called after Picort stabbed PC Jay on 25 October.

Judge John Holt awarded PC Steve Jay £500, adding an “appropriate amount” should be given to the dog.

“PC Jay appears to me to have been remarkably brave,” said Judge Holt.

Picort admitted inflicting grievous bodily harm on his 47-year-old father, Robert, and to wounding PC Steve Jay with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

He also pleaded guilty to damaging property and attacking the six-year-old German shepherd dog.

IPSWICH Wanderers football club appointed former Stowmarket Town boss Steve Jay as their new assistant manager.

Steve Jay reunites with Read again after the pair started the season together at Stowmarket Town, although the management duo will have reversed roles at Wanderers to what they had at Greens Meadow.

Ipswich Wanderers chairman Terry Fenwick said: “I would like on behalf of the to club welcome Steve Jay to the Doucy. It’s great to have somebody so experienced at this level as part of our club, and I think that Steve and Glenn will work well together to help push Wanderers up the table.”

Jay, who also has Ridgeons League experience managing Hadleigh United, takes over the number two position from Paul Grainger, who departed alongside Steve Buckle back in October.

The new assistant will make his first outing in the Wanderers dugout alongside Read on Boxing Day, when his new club host local rivals Whitton United at Humber Doucy Lane (11am kick-off).

Fenwick added: “We haven’t been able to have the Christmas game for a few seasons now because of bad weather, so we’re really hoping for a bumper crowd on Boxing Day to see another positive Wanderers performance.”

Experienced manager Steve Jay took over at Whitton last November and took a team that had recently lost 9-0 to Woodbridge Town and were struggling in the bottom-six, to relative mid-table safety in Thurlow Nunn Division One.

Jay was assisted by Robbie Knott who is thought to be staying on in his capacity at the club.

“We did our best with what we had but it did not feel right for me to stay on and I would not have wanted to remain and done the job half-hearted, so it is best that I give someone else a chance,” said Jay, who has also managed Hadleigh United and Stowmarket Town.

Comic who who worked with Stephen says he ‘never loses temper’ in GBH trial

Actor Stephen Tompkinson is ‘good under pressure’ and ‘never loses his temper’, a comedy writer told his GBH trial today.

The DCI Banks star is on trial at Newcastle Crown Court accused of inflicting grievous bodily harm on Karl Poole by punching him. The 57-year-old said his career had been ‘put on hold’ as a result of the court case.

Character references from Tompkinson’s colleagues were given to the jury.

Comic Andy Hamilton, a writer on Drop the Dead Donkey comedy series which launched his career, appeared in person.

He said: ‘That show was a real pressure cooker as we had very tight deadlines because we put a lot of topical jokes into the script.

‘Stephen was always the calmest member of the production. We did a whole series when he was ill suffering the after effects of malaria which was quite debilitating.

‘So he had every justification in getting hot under the collar but he was very cool headed, very composed, very calm.

‘I have never see him lose his temper, I cannot remember him being aggressive with anyone.

‘I have seen him be the peacemaker when people have been upset and have seen him step in to calm things down.’

He added: ‘Stephen works pretty much permanently and one of the reasons for that is that people know he is good under pressure.’

Actor Stephen Tompkinson punched a man who fell to the ground and suffered ‘traumatic brain injuries’, a court heard.

The DCI Banks star arrived at court on May 3 to stand trial after pleading not guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm on a man in North Tyneside last year.

Tompkinson stands accused of assaulting Karl Poole on Sunday, May 30, last year in Whitley Bay.

The actor pleaded not guilty when the charge was put to him while his barrister, Adam Birkby, said the issue in the case is self-defence.

Earlier, Tompkinson told jurors he spoke to police on his phone moments after the altercation but made no mention of Mr Poole being motionless on the floor or how he fell.

He said he knew from his experience of police dramas that he would get the chance later to give a full explanation of events.

The actor went back inside his house ‘to take stock of the situation’ but returned again after hearing Mr Poole’s friend Andrew Hall say ‘you’ve killed him.’

In a detailed account of an alleged violent altercation at the end of his driveway, Tompkinson told Newcastle Crown Court ‘it was a very frightening situation’ and he felt ‘threatened and shaken’ by the behaviour of two strangers at 5.30am.

Tompkinson said the habit of not making hard contact has been ‘in bred’ during a long career on stage and screen and that only his palm made contact with Mr Poole and not with any force.

The actor told the court as Mr Poole moved towards him ‘I didn’t want to hurt him, I wanted to stop him’.

‘My right arm came over my shoulder and it contacted the left hand side of Karl’s face with an open palm,’ he continued.

‘I didn’t apply any excessive force that would have caused any sober person to fall over.’

But moments later, Mr Poole had fallen to the floor. Tompkinson said he held his mobile phone in his left hand throughout and there was ‘no punch at all’.

He added: ‘I am not responsible for Karl Poole’s double skull fracture. He went off due to his own instability. He fell in a completely different direction.’

Tompkinson said his thought towards Mr Poole was ‘change your mind about coming towards me and further into my property’ and he used his open palm against his face to stop him.

Tompkinson told the jury he found Mr Poole to be ‘snoring very loudly’ on the ground and believed he had ‘given in to his stupor’ as he was ‘passed out in a very very deep sleep.’

Police arrested Tompkinson later in the day after speaking to a neighbour who had seen the incident from her bedroom window and claimed he had punched Mr Poole to the ground.

The actor said the six hours sat in the police station was ‘a very new experience for me.’

Tompkinson told the court that during his long career as an actor he had worked in many ‘stressful situations’ but had never assaulted anyone.

He told the court he got his big break of a seven-month contract with the BBC after winning a top student award when finishing drama school in 1987.

His first big hit was in the TV comedy series Drop the Dead Donkey and the TV series Ballykissangel was watched by 15 million viewers, he said.

Other hits included Wild at Heart and DCI Banks and he also starred in the film Brassed Off. He appeared in the TV series Dad as Barry Martin. He also appeared in the BBC adaption of the book Kes by Barry Hines.

He told the court he had lost work as a result of the case and needed to work to earn a living.

Stephen Tompkinson recalled advice given by his late father when Ballykissangel made him a household name to ‘show respect’ as he had effectively been invited into people’s living rooms.

Jay-Z’s huge influence on who performs at Super Bowl

Rihanna collectively blew millions of minds during this year’s Super Bowl half time show – marking her first live performance in years.

There were whisperings of a drop-in from Eminem, Kanye, or Jay-Z during Rihanna‘s set, given her hit collaborations with the rappers, but the singer commanded the stage solo.

But, even though he might not have been on stage with her, Jay-Z would have played an instrumental part in Rihanna’s headline slot.

Jay-Z, who has featured in a number of songs with Rihanna including ‘Umbrella’ and ‘Run This Town’, has never played the Super Bowl half time show himself, but has a major influence over who gets picked to perform.

It all started back in 2019, when Jay-Z called out the NFL for the way they chose the headliners; narrowing it down to four potential acts before picking a winner.

In a press conference, led by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodwell, Jay-Z complained: “The process of selection was fractured.

“You take four artists and everyone thinks they’re playing the Super Bowl. It’s almost like this interview process.”

He added that, when an act is finally chosen to headline, there are then three ‘upset’ artists who’ve been rejected.

“That’s not even good math,” Jay-Z pointed out.

“After three years, nine people are upset and three people play.

“Ain’t that many superstars in the world. You’re gonna run out of people that want to play.

“I just think the process could’ve been more definite.”

And, with that, Jay-Z’s company Roc Nation entered a partnership with the NFL to help curate one of the biggest live music events in the world.

Since then, the NFL has seen some of the biggest halftime shows ever, including 2022’s West Coast hip hop line-up of Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Dr Dre, Mary J Blige, 50 Cent, and Kendrick Lamar, 2021’s The Weeknd performance, and 2020’s Jennifer Lopez and Shakira collaboration.

Jay-Z has also commented on how the Roc Nation NFL collaboration has made the Super Bowl more inclusive of hip hop as a genre.

He said: “I think that for a long time, and not just the NFL, but America in general looked at rap as this fad thing.

“It’s the number one genre in the world and has been that way … So I would love for these platforms as being more inclusive of our music.”

So it’s no wonder we haven’t seen Jay-Z play the coveted slot yet – it seems he’s way too busy for that.

But if he ever finds the time to squeeze a few rehearsals in… I’m sure no one would be opposed.

Jay-Z Taking Pics of Daughter at Super Bowl Goes Viral

While Jay-Z is a hip-hop juggernaut and one of the most-famous faces in entertainment, he was tasked with regular dad duties while attending Sunday’s Super Bowl LVII with his preteen daughter, Blue Ivy Carter.

Jay-Z, 53, and his eldest offspring, 11, enjoyed prime seats at Glendale, Arizona’s State Farm Stadium. They watched the Kansas City Chiefs secure a 38-35 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles.

The father-daughter duo also cheered on Rihanna’s performance during the Super Bowl Halftime Show. It has been spearheaded by Jay-Z’s Roc Nation entertainment agency since a long-term partnership with the NFL was signed in 2019.

With all of the excitement around them on the momentous day, Blue Ivy appeared keen to document her outing with a few photos—and she tasked her dad with taking the snapshots.

In video footage originally shared on Twitter by Fox Sports’ NFL account, the rapper and entrepreneur Jay-Z, whose real name is Shawn Carter, was seen crouching with a broad smile on his face as he snapped his daughter on the football field.

Looking cool in an all-black ensemble, Blue Ivy then approached her father to check the results of his handiwork as she asked him: “Is it live?”

The adorable video clip went viral on Twitter, garnering more than 3 million views and a flood of hilarious comments from fans.

“Blue Ivy needs a new photographer cause I don’t think whoever this is is cutting it,” quipped one Twitter user.

“Not her directing her dad to take better pictures of her,” wrote another of Blue Ivy, who has been photographed with her dad at sporting events in the past.

Several other fans also commented on how much Blue Ivy resembles and has the mannerisms of her Grammy-winning mother Beyoncé, who was not seen at the Super Bowl. Beyoncé and Jay-Z are also the parents of twins Sir and Rumi, 5.

Blue Ivy, herself a Grammy winner, is Jay-Z and Beyoncé’s eldest child, arriving four years after the stars’ 2008 wedding.

In a 2021 interview with U.K. publication The Sunday Times, Roc Nation founder Jay-Z spoke about fatherhood and his efforts to ensure his children thrive.

“Feeling loved is the most important thing a child needs,” he said. “Not, ‘Here’s this business that I’m going to hand over to you, that I’m creating for you.’ What if my child doesn’t want to be in music or sports? I have no idea, right? But as long as your child feels supported, and feels loved, I think anything is possible.”

Jay-Z added that the key to raising a successful child is to “provide a loving environment:” “Be very attentive to who they want to be. It’s easy for us, as human beings, to want our children to do certain things, but we have no idea. We’re just guides.”

For her part, Texas native Beyoncé told British Vogue in 2020 how much motherhood had affected her approach to work.

“Something cracked open inside of me right after giving birth to my first daughter. From that point on, I truly understood my power, and motherhood has been my biggest inspiration,” Beyoncé said. “It became my mission to make sure she lived in a world where she feels truly seen and valued.

“I was also deeply inspired by my trip to South Africa with my family. And, after having my son, Sir Carter, I felt it was important to uplift and praise our boys and to assure that they grow up with enough films, children’s books and music that promote emotional intelligence, self-value and our rich history. That’s why [the musical film Black Is King] is dedicated to him.”
